Guards Red: The Color That Means Porsche

Ask someone to picture a Porsche from the eighties and nineties. Chances are the car in their head is red. Not just any red: Guards Red, or Indischrot as it is called in German. No other color is tied this closely to the brand itself.

What Guards Red actually is

Guards Red is a solid, non-metallic red that sits in a very deliberate spot: warmer than a pure signal red, but without ever tipping into orange. That balance is the whole trick. Plenty of red cars exist. Very few reds read as unmistakably Porsche from a hundred meters away.

It became the default hero color of the Carrera era. Brochures, posters, dealer showrooms: if Porsche wanted to show you a 911 in this period, it was usually a Guards Red one.

Which cars wore it

The honest answer is almost all of them, which is exactly why it matters. Guards Red ran through the Carrera 3.2, the 944 and 968 family, the 964 and the 993. It was rarely rare, and that is the point: this is not a collector's oddity, it is the color of the era itself.

For the models currently in the Heckblick catalog, that means the 968 CS, the 993 Carrera, and the 996 all look completely at home in it — each with the generation's correct factory code on the print.

The paint code, and the hex that took a test print to get right

Here is a detail I can offer that most sources cannot: a print-validated hex value.

When I built the first Guards Red poster, I used a hex value that looked right on screen. Then I ordered a physical test print on the exact paper I ship, a 200gsm matte fine art stock, 12-color giclée. The result was wrong. Too bright, too synthetic, nothing like the paint on a real car in daylight.

So I corrected it. The value that survived the physical test is #D80100, and that is what every Guards Red poster ships with today. Matte paper mutes and shifts color in ways no screen preview shows you, so a color that has not been proofed on the actual stock is a guess. Mine is not.

On classic and transitional models such as the 968 and 993, Guards Red is factory code 027. Later water-cooled cars use the generation's own code — the poster always shows the one that matches your car.

The footer detail owners notice

Every Heckblick poster carries the paint code and the color name in the layout, the same way a build sheet does. On a Guards Red car that detail lands especially well, because anyone who knows the code knows exactly what they are looking at. It is a quiet handshake between people who care.
