Maritime Blue: The Quiet Icon of the Early Nineties

Some colors shout. Maritime Blue does something harder: it makes people walk across a parking lot without quite knowing why. It is not loud like Speed Yellow or divisive like Riviera Blue. It is simply, completely right, and the early-nineties cars that wore it have aged into some of the most quietly desirable Porsches of the era.

What Maritime Blue actually is

Maritime Blue (Maritimblau) is a solid, non-metallic blue with a slight violet undertone. Deeper than a royal blue, warmer than a navy. In overcast light it looks almost sober, and then the sun comes out and the violet shows itself and the whole car changes character.

That undertone is the color's signature, and, as you will read below, also its biggest trap in reproduction.

Which cars wore it

Maritime Blue is inseparable from the early nineties. It is one of the colors people mean when they talk about that short window when Porsche offered genuinely bold paint on otherwise serious cars.

In the Heckblick catalog it appears on the 968 CS, where it gives the Clubsport a completely different personality than the yellow and red cars: less race paddock, more back road at dusk. Factory code 321.

The violet trap

Here is the technical reason Maritime Blue posters from generic print shops so often look wrong: that violet undertone.

Matte fine art paper amplifies color tints. A dark blue with a violet lean, printed without calibration, does not just shift slightly — it can tip over and read as purple on the wall. At that point it is no longer the color of your car, it is a different color entirely. The reverse failure exists too: strip out the violet to be safe and you get a generic navy that could be from any brochure of any brand.

Every color in my catalog is proofed on a physical test print, on the exact 200gsm matte stock I ship, in a 12-color giclée process, judged in daylight. For dark blues that proofing step is not a nice-to-have, it is the difference between "that is my car" and "that is almost my car." Almost is not the product. The hex that survived that test is #4B77EB.

The build sheet detail

Every Heckblick poster carries the paint code and color name in the layout, the way a build sheet does. Maritime Blue owners tend to be exactly the kind of people who notice that. It is a color you chose on purpose, or sought out on purpose decades later, and the poster says so.
